Unilateral Additive Manufactured Subperiosteal Jaw Implant for Complex Oral Rehabilitation: Case Report

ABSTRACT
This article shows a case report of a unilateral additive manufactured subperiosteal jaw implant. Advanced stages of bone loss due to trauma or age can lead to severe bone atrophies (Cawood and Howell class V–VI bone atrophy scale) and present a challenge for patients not only for daily activities such as eating and talking with proper phonetics but also from an aesthetic point of view. We present a detailed case of a young male patient with a history of facial trauma resulting in severe bone atrophy of the third quadrant with a previous failed iliac crest bone graft and multiple comorbidities. Additive manufactured subperiosteal implants made of titanium may provide a fast and reliable solution for complex cases of oral restorations that generally would have to go through multiples stages of surgery with sometimes unpredictable results. The implant is custom made through computer-aided design with finite element analysis, sandblasted on the bone surface, and acid-etched on the vestibular side, taking into account precise parameters like the number, size, direction, and position of the vertical posts along with the final hybrid bridge. The patient can come out of surgery with a temporary prosthesis in one procedure.
